Queenslanders love their sport and the city of Brisbane is home to many excellent sporting venues. The closest to Econo Lodge City Star is the Brisbane Cricket Ground affectionately known as ‘The Gabba’. A world-class venue for cricket and rugby matches, as well as many other sporting events and concerts, The Gabba is just a quick five minute walk from our Kangaroo Point motel.
The Gabba takes its name from the suburb of Woolloongabba where it’s based in Brisbane. Home of the Queensland Bulls cricket team and Brisbane Lions rugby team, The Gabba has been fixture of the Brisbane landscape since the late 1800s. A multi-million dollar redevelopment between 1993 and 2005 transformed the stadium into a world class sporting venue with top-notch facilities including: seating capacity for 42,000, high quality corporate and function facilities and a state of the art playing field with excellent viewing from any angle.
Econo Lodge is a great choice for those seeking accommodation near the Gabba. Check out oursuggested itinerary if you’re travelling to Brisbane for a game.
Just a short walk from the Brisbane CBD, Suncorp Stadium in Milton is a state of the art stadium used for rugby union and league matches, soccer games and concerts. Rugby League has been played on its turf since 1914 when it was known as Lang Park. A popular nickname for the stadium is ‘The Cauldron’ for its bowl-like shape and infectious atmosphere. The Suncorp Stadium was modernised in July 2001 and can now hold a capacity of over 52,000 people.
Design features of the Suncorp Stadium that take into account the Queensland climate include a roof which covers 75% of all seating, timber screens and open air bars.
